Platform Statement
Bob Bernatos
Fellow Patrollers,
I am
announcing my intention to run for the Office of Regional Director in
the upcoming election.
We
should all thank Gerit Lewisch for his 6 years of outstanding service to
the EPA Region He has accomplished many things, and I look forward to
following in his footsteps and to the challenges of the position of
Regional Director. We should also thank all of the current elected and
appointed officers, program advisors and coordinators for their
outstanding services to the patrollers of the EPA Region.
While
serving as the Southwest Section Chief for 5 years, I gained valuable
knowledge and experience about the need for effective leadership,
pro-active program delivery, and providing guidance to the NSP Patrol
Representatives concerning difficult issues through an open exchange of
information. I also learned the value of cooperative interface with Ski
Area Management.
As
Section Chief/Regional Delegate, I attended the annual Eastern Division
Spring Officers Meetings and gained valuable insight as to how things
work at both the Region and Division levels. Serving as Chairperson of
the annual Divisional Section Chief’s meeting for 2 years, I was able to
communicate with other Section Chiefs throughout the Division, sharing
what the EPA Region does and learning how things are done in the other
14 Regions of our Division. By having a meeting agenda prepared and
agreed upon by the Section Chiefs before the meeting through the use of
the internet communications, we were able to accomplish more in the
2-hour meeting slot than what was done in the past.
One
of my goals as your Region Director will be to ensure that the needs of
all patrollers are met where possible, I will support and abide by the
by-laws and policies and procedures of the Eastern Division and Eastern
PA Region. I would like to improve upon our current budgeting process
for EPA programs through more program coordinator input and tracking
both income and expenses on an annual basis. I also want to review and
improve the regional guidelines for reimbursement of expenses for those
continuing education Instructors that are putting in the extra efforts
to provide the training opportunities for the members of the EPA Region.
We also need to make sure that all of the Region programs such as MTR,
Avalanche, Young Adult, S&T, OEC, and the Senior Alpine and Nordic
have the necessary equipment to run quality events.
During
the past year, a lot of effort was put into working with the
Pennsylvania Department of Health-EMS, PSAA, NSAA, and our NSP National
Office on developing and implementing regulations for health service
providers under Pennsylvania’s new Act 37. I support these involvements
by our organization and the need to continue to monitor and participate
in this joint effort. It is important that NSP preserves its members’
rights to provide unimpeded services to the sporting public, while
maintaining an open line of communications and cooperating fully with
our associates in the emergency health services field. In that regard,
I support the continuance of Pennsylvania’s optional Emergency Medical
Responder (First Responder) registration for Patrollers, which provides
24/7 liability protection when opting to provide out-of-ski area
emergency services to the public.
The financial state of the region is currently
very good and I see no need to increase our regional dues at this time.
If you have any questions or concerns that you
would like to discuss with me, please do not hesitate to contact me.
